The Eight Laws of Personal Branding
1.
The Law of Specialization – Focus your brand on one area of achievement. A Personal Brand must engage an audience with its clarity and simplicity. Know your audience and their needs. Then, position your brand to meet those needs.
Example: Charles Schwab (Everyone’s Investment Adviser)
2.
The Law of Leadership – You must be acknowledged as one of the most knowledgeable, respected or skilled in your field.
Example: Michael Jordan (The Greatest Basketball Player Ever)
3.
The Law of Personality – A brand must be built around one’s personality in all its aspects, including flaws.
Example: Oprah Winfrey (Crusader of Women’s Empowerment)
4.
The Law of Distinctiveness - Once you have created your Personal Brand, you must express it in a unique way. Distinctiveness is usually gotten through behavior, physicality, or lifestyle.
Example: Jimmy Buffett (Margaritas for the Masses)
5.
The Law of Visibility – To be effective, your Personal Brand must be seen repeatedly.
Example: Madonna (Queen of Self-Reinvention)
6.
The Law of Unity – Your behavior behind closed doors must match your public brand. Three zones (relationships, finances, conduct).
Example: Albert Einstein (The Genius)
7.
The Law of Persistence – Once you establish your brand, give it time to grow, stick with it and ignore fads.
Example: Larry King (King of the Talk Show)
8.
The Law of Goodwill – The more you are perceived as well-intentioned or embodying valued ideals, the more influential your brand.
Example: Mother Teresa (Modern-day Saint)
